DIETS FOR HYPERTENSION, ARTERIOSCLEROSIS AND OTHER SIGNS OF OLD AGE – TREATMENT

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

A doctor in the United States has helped many people suffering from hypertension by means of a diet similar to the one suggested below. These patients would probably not have been so successful had they tried the treatment alone at home, as the temptation to lapse back into old habits may have been too strong. Through the treatment the high blood pressure was reduced, but with it went a considerable sum of money too.

As a rule, the results of this treatment begin to be seen after 3—4 months. So, if a patient can only spare four weeks to attend a clinic, he does not really have to give up when the time comes to leave, because the experience gained may be used at home and he can continue the regime. True enough, it does take a little willpower to be consistent and not revert to one’s old eating habits. Of course, family members can help tremendously by showing understanding and giving encouragement. Success will not fail to come in time. In the paragraphs below we are glad to give valuable hints and directions for a recommended diet.

DIETS FOR HYPERTENSION, ARTERIOSCLEROSIS AND OTHER SIGNS OF OLD AGE – IMPORTANCE OF DIET

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Since high blood pressure is usually associated with eating too much protein, patients would be wise to cut out from their diet all animal proteins such as meat, eggs and cheese; if they think they cannot live without these, they should at least reduce the quantities to a bare minimum. In other words, the basis of the diet should be rice, cottage cheese and salads, if high blood pressure is to drop.

The reason rice is of such importance in this diet is that it helps to restore the elasticity of the blood vessels. Soft white cheese (quark) is a good source of protein, goes well with vegetables, especially salads, and is tasty. By adding various seasonings, for example horseradish, curry and all kinds of herbs, as well as vegetable juices, you can enrich its content and taste and provide some variety. Salads, by the way, supply the body with the necessary vitamins and essential mineral salts.

DIETS FOR HYPERTENSION, ARTERIOSCLEROSIS AND OTHER SIGNS OF OLD AGE – INTRODUCTION

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

It is important to determine whether hypertension, or high blood pressure, is caused by a kidney disease or by the diminishing elasticity of the blood vessels. If the latter, it may be easily corrected through a rice diet, as this is effective in practically all diseases attributable to the aging process. Rice is a medicinal food, which provides surprisingly good results, but you must be sure to use brown unpolished rice, for this is more beneficial and valuable than the more common refined white rice. If you cannot obtain brown rice, although this is unlikely, two commercially prepared rice packages, ‘Uncle Ben’s’ and ‘Avorio’ may serve as a compromise, because both of these brands still retain many of the important minerals found in brown rice.

It is not easy for everyone in countries where rice is not produced to stick to a rice diet. In many areas people are used to eating mainly potatoes and local cereals, but in the Far East rice is a staple food. In this respect people in Far Eastern countries are better off, for if they adhere faithfully to the simple brown rice diet of their forefathers, they will never have to worry about high blood pressure.

CONTRACEPTIVE – INTRODUCTION

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

The giving of contraceptive advice appears on the surface to be a straightforward and uncomplicated matter, consisting of two adults talking to each other. One is the patient, usually a woman coming for advice and guidance on which method to use, the other the doctor providing expert knowledge on benefits and risks.

The purpose of this chapter is to alert the doctor to the way unconscious conflicts, ambivalence and covert problems can present under the guise of a problem with contraception. It may well be inevitable, and indeed necessary, for the doctor to be caught up to some extent in the patient’s conflict in order for it to be understood. Provided he or she can then step back and think about what is going on and suggest an interpretation for the patient, it may be possible for the conflict to be resolved.

HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL ATTITUDES TO FERTILITY – OVERPOPULATION

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

The decision to have a child must be the most fateful a person ever makes, involving as it does the creation of a new human being. Until comparatively recently in human history (the last 200 years), greater concern has been focused on fertility and the ability to have children to ensure the continuity of the human race, rather than the prevention of pregnancy. It is easy to lose sight of this historical legacy in the face of the problems to do with overpopulation. The barren woman unable to have children has always had a negative image. Thus the emphasis was on the ability to conceive. Fertility rites, spring festivals and the ancient fertility goddesses all bear witness to that (Neumann, 1955). All religions are pronatalist and anti-abortion, except in special circumstances. Couples were, and in some cases still are, urged ‘to be fruitful and multiply’, and ‘to replenish the curth’ as stated in the Book of Genesis. The purpose of sex was procreation and the gift of life was regarded as God-given. Riches were measured in the number of children a couple had, especially sons.

National governments too are involved in individual decisions about fertility. Although there are 75 countries in which the birth rate is considered to be too high, there are still 21 where there are national policies aimed at increasing the number of births (United Nations, 1990).
