A meal without fatty foods should not represent a problem. Try fish or chicken instead of meat (chicken skin should be avoided as it is fatty). And insist on grilled food rather than fried. Go easy on cheese. Although many slimmers think cheese is an ideal dietary aid it is rich in animal fats and unless eaten sparingly may contribute to putting on weight rather than shedding it.

Eat as many green vegetables and salads as you like. Not only are they an excellent source of vitamins and minerals but they also supply the essential fibre the system needs to keep it functioning efficiently.

MALE MENOPAUSE: HOW TO SURVIVE – SURVIVING THE SEX CRISIS (SEXUAL DREAMS)

In many circles sexual voyaging, especially that of having an affair, is morally condemned but it has to be accepted nonetheless as a fact of life today that sexlife is freer than ever it was and that both men and women often enjoy secret sexlives outside their marriages.

But whereas a bachelor conducting an affair can be regarded as acceptable because there is always the off-chance that the affair is a prelude to permanence, that is, marriage, for a married man to do so he can only be seen in one light, bad. He is unfaithful, a sinner.

Given half a chance most men would jump to the opportunity of putting their sexual dreams into action. It’s history. A dalliance of this sort is balm for the ego. However, if you are a man of affairs, although no one can control your actions, be careful not foolish. To you, your sexlife may be simply an irresponsible pleasure with no further commitment but a wife, family, lover or boss may not think of it in such light terms as you do. Many people will feel emotionally hurt, shocked and let down. Remember the consequences and what it is you stand to lose. On discovery, with some justification, you may squarely blame the male-menopause for your lust, but will anyone else?

That said, even after the male-menopause has faded, do not forget that just as in the good old pre-menopause days, sex is not always as regular a part of daily life as a cup of coffee, scrubbing teeth or watching TV.

MALE MENOPAUSE: INTRODUCTION 3

Not every man suffers the anguish of sexual problems during the male-menopause but for the majority it seems as their egos falter and the emotional problems brought on by the crisis start making them question needs and values, so this becomes crunch time.

In one sore moment self-esteem can take a blow, the libido weaken, drive evaporate. Even a man with a normally high libido can be thrown off-course and sexlife, already finely tuned by emotional stability, takes an upward or downward turn. For the better or for the worse. A man can feel either ready for more loving and ripe for an affair outside his marriage or, ego shattered, he may turn away completely from sex, his sexlife grinding to a halt. It is go or no-go. The male-menopause has a lot to answer for.

Liberated homosexuals established in a promiscuous sexlife seem to have fewer worries at this time about sex drive possibly because in their freewheeling world there are many different roles that can be played with impunity. Subconsciously, like heterosexual men, they may begin to seek out younger and more exciting partners to prove their own attractiveness and to prove their power and appeal has not worn off with age.

MISSING OUT OR FEELING CHEATED: AT HOME – BEING HEALTHY

The onset of M-M can make a man more aware of his health than ever he has been before and being fit can become a major preoccupation. Being fit offers hope of retaining youth if not recapturing it. The most concerned react energetically by taking to jogging, playing the occasional game of squash, watching their weight and eating a diet low in fat and carbohydrate, and purchasing vitamin pills in bulk.

Some with a leaning towards the aesthetic concentrate on the inner man, giving up alcohol and tobacco and turning to vegetarianism and healthfood store products for their salvation, while those with a leaning towards hypochondria head for their doctor’s consulting rooms.

Those taking regular exercise and eating a balanced, sensible diet find they feel better and life generally looks better.

WHAT IT IS – MALE-MENOPAUSE 3

Until recently it was considered that the crisis struck a man soon after he was fifty but in this book all references are made to menopausal man being between thirty-nine and forty-five years. The reason for this change is tied in with the fact that men today achieve so much more earlier in their lives than ever they did before. Research by analysts and sociologists indicates that although some men may still experience the male-menopause late, with the more rapid growth of personal achievement and with expectations being fulfilled sooner — younger marriages, rewarding salaries, own home, work promotion — so the male-menopause strikes the majority of men earlier. Until recently where once a high-powered executive might have been fifty, now he is likely to be about forty if not younger. At fifty many men are already considered spent, overtaken by youthful men who have energy, push, skill, technology or invention on their side. The career ladder is climbed faster and faster. Although only partly concerned with the increased stress that ambition and fight for achievement bring, the male-menopause, like personal success, has also moved on to younger men.
